Brett Kappel was quoted in a recent Washington Post article regarding the likelihood of the FEC responding to claims of illegal campaign contributions from Elon Musk and X, formerly known as Twitter

In an article titled “Democrats flip social media ‘censorship’ complaints on Musk, GOP” by Cristiano Lima-Strong, published by the Washington Post on August 13, 2024, Brett Kappel spoke to the possibility of the Federal Election Commission responding to claims by Democrats that recent actions by Elon Musk and X were illegal in-kind campaign contributions. Kappel explains that “…those claims are no more likely to succeed with regulators at the Federal Election Commission than similar ones did when Republicans pushed them.” Kappel goes on to state that “The FEC has consistently dismissed complaints against social media sites where they could show that they were merely enforcing their own moderation rules…That’s likely to continue to be the case with X even though the company has seriously weakened its own rules.”
