Brett Kappel was recently quoted in the AARP Bulletin for June 2024 regarding the increase in election scams for the upcoming voting cycle
In an article titled “Veto These Election Scams” by Sari Harrar, published in the June 2024 AARP Bulletin, Kappel speaks on the dangers of scam PACs. Kappel explains that these scams usually target a certain demographic, stating that “Almost half of individual campaign contributions come from people age 50 and older.” To avoid these scams, Kappel recommends never immediately donating to a group that contacts you, and to instead donate directly to the candidate through contact information that can be verified with the Federal Election Commission. Additionally, “Legitimate PACs must have bank accounts and will accept credit cards…Scammers want you to use PayPal, send a check or, worse yet, a gift card, because the money can’t be recovered,” Kappel states. Also, you can confirm a PAC’s finances through the FEC’s website to determine the legitimacy of a group.
