Harmon Curran is pleased to announce that two new attorneys have joined the firm

Brett Kappel joined Harmon Curran in June 2020 in an Of Counsel capacity. He is a leading national authority on campaign finance, lobbying and government ethics laws and has extensive experience in political law on the local, state and federal levels.

At the firm, Brett will advise clients on the development of government relations programs, including the creation and operation of political action committees and other ancillary tax-exempt organizations.

Brett’s expertise on campaign finance issues has been featured in national publications including The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Politico, and The Hill, and he has been recognized as a top Washington, DC lawyer by Super Lawyers Magazine for legislative and governmental affairs, and administrative law.

Brett is a 1980 graduate of State University of New York at Albany and received his J.D. from University of Virginia School of Law in 1990.

Susan Hamsher joined Harmon Curran as a Senior Associate in November 2019 and comes to us with almost a decade of experience advising nonprofits.

At the firm, Susan will advise our clients on the legal issues facing nonprofits including the wide range of tax, campaign finance, election, lobbying, and fundraising laws applicable to tax-exempt organizations.

Prior to joining Harmon Curran, Susan was an attorney at The Nature Conservancy, one of the world’s largest environmental charities. She advised the Conservancy’s various divisions in the U.S. and globally on tax, fundraising, privacy, intellectual property, lobbying, government ethics, and campaign finance for ballot measures. Susan also served as the primary attorney to the Conservancy’s program in India.

Susan is a 2001 graduate of University of Virginia and received her J.D. from American University’s Washington College of Law in 2009.
